Our Pick for Best Glue for Jewelry Making

Out of all of the best glue for jewelry, Aleene's Jewelry and Metal Instant adhesive was my favorite.

Why?

This jewelry adhesive is made FOR jewelry. It has great multi-purpose use for beads, embellishments, pave stones, and dainty details. Some of the glues on this list are general glues and some are jewelry glues.

However, this is the only jewelry glue that has the largest range of materials it works with. It's perfect for crafters and jewelry repairs alike. Most glues can only handle the basic embellishments, but this is perfect for complex designs.

It dries pretty quickly, but maybe not as quickly as some of the super glues you know. However, if you're making quality jewelry, it's good to let it sit for 24 hours anyway.

What Is The Best Glue For Jewelry Making?

Before any jewelry comes to life, it has to go through a series of processes. One major one is sticking pieces together. For instance, an opal pendant to a sterling silver chain, or a nice diamond stud.

To do this...

You’ll need a great soldering machine (in certain metals) or an effective glue that’s particularly designed for jewelry.

Jewelry glue has adhesives with strong bonding characteristics that make the elements of your piece of jewelry stick together. Jewelry glues are made to last rough and everyday uses.

They can also be used to repair broken jewelry. Depending on the materials used, these indispensable jewelry tools come in different names.

They can be termed as craft glues, hot glues, epoxy resin glue, or generally jewelry & metal glue.

Jewelry adhesive properties work best on many materials including:

  • Metals
  • Gems
  • Beads
  • Ceramics
  • Plastics
  • Stones
  • Polymer clay
  • And many more!

Is Glue For Jewelry Expensive Or Cheap?

Probably one of the easiest jewelry accessories available are glues. They are accessible across hardware stores and online shops for jewelry.

Not only are they easy to find, but your choice for best jewelry adhesive is incredibly cheap! And that’s the beauty of it!

What Should You Look For In The Best Glue For Jewelry?

Sometimes your beautiful pendant needs a little bit of effort to stay put. Even though many jewelry glue sellers claim to have the best product, there’s a couple of things to look for when choosing the right jewelry adhesive.

Whether it is a simple DIY project or a gem replacement, finding the right type of glue for your jewelry is essential.

Things to know about jewelry adhesive:

Instant Glue

Instant glue is normally used for items that don’t require strong adhesives. That’s because instant glue has a thin consistency, dries fast, and is nearly invisible. It can do in light jewelry repairs like securing the end of a cord.

Jewelers Cement

Also known as cement, this is a high-strength jewelry adhesive and a great option for minute jewelry making processes. This is the best glue for jewelry repair or add-ons like adding embellishments or working with small gems in pave-type jewelry.

Jewelers cement dries fast and mostly comes with custom applicators to help you use in small spaces.

All-Purpose Contact Adhesive

The all-purpose adhesive is usually termed as E-6000 and is by far the most widely used jewelry glue. It is definitely an item you should have in your jewelry kit. This versatile adhesive glue can be the best glue for making earrings because it works for so many different stones and materials.

The E6000 is waterproof, flexible, and paintable as well. You can use it in a wide variety of applications as it’s compatible with ceramics, plastic, glass, fabric, and many other materials.

Epoxy Resin Glue

Epoxy is another fairly popular adhesive and one of the strongest types of jewelry glues. It's the best glue for resin jewelry-making.

That said, an epoxy is a great option if you’re looking to stick beads or gems to cord ends of metal surfaces too. It's a strong contender for best jewelry glue.

Super Glue

"Can you use Gorilla Glue on jewelry?"

You wouldn't believe how many people making jewelry ask this. But It's really no surprise. Super glue is a common product found in most homes. However, you can Gorilla glue for jewelry, but make precautions.

If you're setting stones, you'll have to set them quickly. Gorilla glue and other super glue brands are meant to dry almost instantly so you don't have time to be careful.

It's not the best glue for jewelry repair, nor is it the best glue for making jewelry. You should use a different glue when making big repairs or jewelry add-ons.

Super glue can be helpful if you need something on hand to fix small repairs. However, it can also be the best glue for earring posts. Just make sure you're applying them straight when you glue it!

Bonus buying tips:

  • Avoid ground shipping your jewelry adhesive during cold months as most items will lose effectiveness under extremely low temperatures. Super glue is, particularly at a higher risk.
  • Interestingly, if you accidentally buy a super glue bond instead of a lighter adhesive, you can weaken the glues by placing it in a freezer for a couple of hours.
  • If you are planning to use the jewelry you’re fixing every day, consider a flexible adhesive.

How To Remove Glue From Jewelry?

One can never be too careful when dealing with jewelry adhesive. Tricky situations can lead to problems like:

  • Accidentally pouring glue on the working surface
  • Fingers stuck on glue or together
  • Excess glue spilling on unwanted areas of your jewelry

Though you may not have experienced these gluing situations, it’s still good to know how to get yourself out of it. Here are a couple of tips I came up with on how you can get rid of jewelry adhesive on any surface.

Use a polishing cloth

A polishing cloth can shine your jewelry and also help you remove excess glue left behind by the particular jewelry adhesive. The clothes will remove dullness and restore shine!

Rubbing Alcohol

Isopropyl alcohol (or rubbing alcohol) is a common jewelry cleaner and an effective solution to remove glue from your jewelry. However, before using it, you should check to see if your material is compatible with it.

Generally, isopropyl alcohol will not affect gold and silver, plated metals, and stainless steel. It is also great on rhinestones and most gemstones but might damage softer stones like opal and pearls.

To ensure you don’t ruin your jewelry, swab a small area with the alcohol and observe what happens.

To perform a glue clean up with rubbing alcohol, soak the jewelry in a solution of isopropyl alcohol and let it stay for a few hours. Remove the adhesive with a cotton cloth or a soft microfiber cloth.

Acetone

If you have an extra piece of nail remover then you don’t need to go looking for acetone. Removers have a high content of acetone and can be used to remove adhesive from your skin or jewelry.

As a precaution, take a small amount of acetone and test if it is compatible with your jewelry.

Scrape it off

The easiest way to remove glue from your jewelry is wiping it off before it dries. It makes your jewelry project less worrisome. If you find excess dried glue on your jewelry, use a small compatible tool (brush, toothpick, etc.) to scrape it off.

It works on some glue types and may be difficult for other jewelry findings and soft semi-precious stones. So, the best way to go about it is to test by checking the hardness of each gem before scraping it off.

Use the Mohs hardness scale as a standard measure.

Our Top Pick

Our top pick for this list still remains the same: the Aleene's Jewelry & Metal Instant Adhesive

It is a versatile glue with so many compatible material options.
